At the end of 2014, the Research Excellence Framework (REF) was published; the first review of university research excellence undertaken since 2008. Maintaining 14th place in the UK validates the University of Sheffield’s international reputation across a wide range of disciplines.
This result places Sheffield in the top 10 per cent of all UK universities, demonstrating the quality and volume of the University’s research activity. 86 per cent of the research submitted by the academic staff was deemed world leading or internationally excellent.
A new addition to the rankings was measuring impact; to investigate the effects research has on the world. From science and engineering to the arts and business, the University of Sheffield has contributed many breakthroughs in recent years.
Among the departments with exceptional results were:
- Biomedical sciences - 1st in the UK for subjects related to healthcare.
- History, Politics, and Automatic Control and Systems Engineering were all ranked 3rd in the UK.
- Biological Sciences, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre), Education and Architecture, Landscape and Town and Regional Planning were all 5th.
- Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Law and Music were ranked in the top ten.
Professor Richard Jones, the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at the University said:
“The results really confirm the quality of what we are doing in the University, right across all faculties and disciplines. They are very strong results, and it is particularly gratifying to see that in every discipline there is a high fraction of work judged to be of the highest international quality.”
This latest news confirms that students at Sheffield are taught by some of the very best researchers in their fields.
