Curriculum

While your main focus will be on criminology, you’ll study one sociology module during each of your three years on the course. This will help you to broaden your understanding of the key concepts in criminology and enable you to offer fresh insights into the broader social causes and consequences of crime.

In the first two years, you’ll gain a solid grounding in criminology by studying contemporary issues and debates, key theories, the legal framework, the characteristics of the criminal justice system and research methods. In sociology you’ll take the Thinking Sociologically and the Social Theory modules.

In your final year, you’ll have a wide choice of 20 options in both subjects to tailor your degree to areas of particular interest to you.

Your options will include Race, Ethnicity, Crime and Justice; Youth Crime and Sub-Culture; Constructions of ‘Race’ in Culture and Politics; and Sociology of Identity and Difference. We’ll also expect you to conduct your own research and complete an in-depth project based on a relevant topic of your choosing.
