Curriculum

PhD including arts practice as research
The student researching for the PhD including Arts Practice as Research may combine arts practice with other research methods. The student is expected to present a substantial body of creative work in the form of an exhibition/media output/performance or its appropriate documentation for the final examination. Submissions will include a written component of no less than 20,000 and no more than 50,000 words. The written submission will articulate the relevant historical, theoretical, critical and/or design context and area of enquiry arising from the context, include a critical reflection on the research methods including arts practice, present the findings of the research, and indicate the original contribution to knowledge resulting from the work. The balance between written and practical elements will be determined by individual students, in consultation with their supervisors.

PhD
In the case of the standard PhD research will not include arts practice as a research method, although visual research and analysis may be included and presented as part of the written work. The final submission for examination will take the form of a written work embodying the aims, methods and results of the research. The length of the written work must be appropriate to the subject area and is not to exceed 100,000 words, excluding footnotes and references.
