About Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP)

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was established in 1997 and has grown to be one of the most prominent private universities in Malaysia.

UTP offers a wide range of industry-relevant engineering, science and technology programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and aims to produce well-rounded graduates with excellent leadership qualities and communication abilities.

UTP is the first and only private university in Malaysia to be rated a maximum 5-star overall rating in the QS StarsTM University Rating System.

UTP also made its first appearance in the QS Top 50 under 50 and is ranked in the 91-100 band.  The ranking is based on the world’s best universities that are less than 50 years old. 6 institutions in Malaysia received such recognition this year namely UPM, UTM, UKM, USM, UIA and UTP, with the last two having the same rank of 91-100.

Apart from the QS rankings, UTP had also, for the first time, made the list in The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2016-2017. UTP and other Malaysian research universities UKM, UPM, USM and UTM are all ranked in the 601-800 band.

UTP had also made its debut in the prestigious THE BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2017, coming in at 91st.  This placed UTP among the top 100 best research-led universities in the developing world.

Recently, UTP made its debut into the THE Asia University Rankings 2017, ranking it at the 141-150 band.

The university conducts extensive research activities in collaboration with PETRONAS and other institutions and industries locally and abroad focusing on 9 niche areas.  They are Enhanced Oil Recovery, Carbon Dioxide Management, Deepwater Technology, Nanotechnology, Green Technology, Biomedical Technology, Hybrid Energy Systems, Intelligent Cities and Sustainable Resources.

UTP is the first and only private university to be awarded a 6-star rating (the highest performance level) by Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia for its research, development and commercialisation efforts under the Malaysia Research Assessment Rating System (MyRA).

UTP continues to provide distinctive educational opportunities to its students with the rating of Tier 5 (Excellent) University for SETARA (Rating System for the Malaysian Higher Education Institutions) and achieved Tier 5 for D-SETARA (Discipline-Based Rating System) in Engineering.
