In January 2024, Professor Dr. Pradeep Nair announced his early retirement as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer of Taylor’s University, stepping down after more than 33 years of dedicated service in various roles.
When we think of early retirement, many imagine it as a time for new hobbies, family, and travel — all while enjoying good health. For Professor Pradeep, however, early retirement became a time to reflect and reset, stepping back from work to gain fresh perspective.
Yet, those who knew him well were skeptical. It was hard for both friends, family and industry associates to imagine someone with such passion for education walking away so soon. Indeed, many reliably told him, "You’re far from finished. You still have so much more to contribute to education in this country."
Just six months into his retirement, a meeting with Tan Sri Sir Dr. Jeffrey Cheah — Founder and Chairman of the Sunway Group, and Founder of Sunway University and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation — changed everything. Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah shared his personal philosophy of “aspiring to inspire before I expire” and how he had transferred the equity and rights of the Sunway Education Group, worth billions of ringgits, into the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation. This gesture aimed to promote quality education, research, and sustainable development.
Inspired by this vision, Professor Pradeep found the idea of contributing to Malaysia’s largest education-focused social enterprise irresistible. He decided to return to work, taking up the position of Executive Director of the Sunway Education Group.
"There are many young leaders at Sunway Education who are ready to step into the roles I once held," Professor Pradeep said. "I want to be part of their journey, to support their growth, and, in doing so, contribute to the broader development of higher education in Malaysia."
With regards to the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation he added, “This monumental egalitarian effort ensures that more young people have access to the same resources, education, and opportunities for success. It’s life-changing for the students who have benefitted from over RM745 million in scholarships and bursaries provided by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.”
Professor Pradeep’s return to education highlights his unwavering commitment to the field. His passion for shaping the future through education has drawn him back, ensuring that his work will continue to impact countless lives. At Sunway Education Group, he embarks on a new chapter, focused on expanding opportunities for the next generation of leaders.
