Curtin University’s rise in global rankings reaffirms Curtin Malaysia’s standing as No. 1 university in Borneo

Miri - 14 June 2018 - Curtin University has continued to hold its strong position as one of the world’s best universities aged 50 years and under in the 2018 Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings, rising to 68, up from 84 in 2017.

This comes almost simultaneously with its outstanding achievement in the 2018-19 QS World University Rankings (QSWUR) released last week, rising to No. 250 in the world.

Curtin University has been consistently a world leader as well as the Australian university that has climbed the most places in the global rankings in recent years, entering the echelons of the top one per cent of the world’s universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) in 2017.

This bodes well for Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), which can proudly continue to lay claim to being the highest globally-ranked tertiary institution in Borneo.

Curtin Malaysia, Curtin’s largest international campus and global hub in Asia located here in Sarawak, also happens to be the largest Australian international campus in the world with a 300-acre campus and another 700 acres earmarked for further development.

With over 4,000 students from over 50 different countries and internationally-recruited staff from some 15 countries strengthening its global focus, Curtin Malaysia offers an international and cross-cultural learning environment in a unique Malaysian setting.

Other than location and the fact that it charges very affordable Malaysian fees for courses that are identical to those offered by Curtin in Australia, students at Curtin Malaysia get the same education and learning experience as their counterparts at the main campus in Perth.

As part of a global university with campuses in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai and Mauritius, they can also choose to study part of their courses, complete their undergraduate degrees, or undertake a further degree at another Curtin campus.

Upon graduation, they will join an active network of over 215,000 Curtin alumni spread across the world.

Curtin Malaysia Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski said he was delighted Curtin has continued to receive global recognition in these key rankings.

He added that Curtin Malaysia is proud to play a leading role in expanding Curtin University’s educational and research footprint in the region be a key part of Curtin University and to continue being the highest-ranked global institution in Borneo.

“This is a wonderful achievement and is testament to the dedication of all of our staff and students,” Professor Mienczakowski said.

Curtin has improved on its global position in the prestigious THE Young University Rankings for the past three years, rising to 68 this year, from 84 in 2017 and 92 in 2016. The results demonstrate Curtin’s improved research impact and increased international outlook, which aligns with the recent openings of its campuses in Dubai and Mauritius, as well as new developments at its Malaysian campus.

The THE Young University Rankings measures institutions against five performance indicators. Curtin improved across four of five indicators, with the biggest increases in Citations and Teaching.

Curtin also improved its position on the QS World University Rankings (QSWUR), rising to 250 on the world, up from 262 in 2017.

Assessing universities against six indicators, the latest QSWUR results showed Curtin’s score for Citations by Faculty has improved by 22 per cent, and Faculty to Student Ratio has risen by six per cent. The University has also maintained a perfect score for International Faculty each year since 2013.

Enrolment for Curtin Malaysia’s July/August (Semester 2) intake is now open and potential students can enquire about the course by logging into bit.ly/2iPcTOL. Details can also be found at courses.curtin.edu.my.
