About Curtin University, Malaysia

Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is the first offshore campus and largest international campus of Curtin University, Western Australia (Curtin Perth), an Australian university ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide in the highly regarded Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2017. It is also the first foreign university campus to be established in East Malaysia in 1999.

Like its Australian parent, Curtin Malaysia has a very global focus with over 5,000 students from over 50 countries. Highly-qualified teaching staff from some 15 countries further strengthen its international outlook.

In addition, students are offered flexibility in completing their degrees, in which they can study part of their degrees at Curtin’s main campus in Perth or at its other branch campuses in Singapore and Dubai.

Curtin Malaysia offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in engineering and related sciences, business and humanities, as well as courses at pre-university level that feed directly into its undergraduate programmes. The courses benefit from the input of industrial partners and the campus’ location in the industrial hub of Sarawak where students can gain valuable industry exposure.

In addition, aside from the joys and benefits of living in Australia compared to the joys and benefits of living in Malaysia, the major difference between pursuing a Curtin degree in Perth or in Miri is one of cost. Completing a Curtin degree at Curtin Malaysia is currently around a third the cost of completing exactly the same degree in Australia - an option that is certainly worth considering.

Campus

Located in Miri, Sarawak; Curtin Malaysia boasts a 1,200-acre garden campus and modern facilities befitting its status as Curtin’s largest international campus, and one of Malaysia’s leading tertiary institutions according to Malaysia’s SETARA ratings.

Our campus in Miri, Sarawak offers a completely unique study experience. Located in the East Malaysia, with the incomparable, 187 000 hectare Miri-Sibuti Coral Reef National Park just offshore, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gunung Mulu National Park, a mere 45 minutes away, our campus is a gateway to all of the incredible adventures to be had in East Malaysia.

Miri is often referred to as the ‘Oil Town of Malaysia’ as it is home to the country’s over 100-year-old petroleum industry, as well as Sarawak’s ‘Resort City’ given its scenic seaside location and being the gateway city to the area’s world renowned natural attractions.  The oil and gas industry remains the largest contributor to the economy of Sarawak but other industries such as forestry and agriculture burgeoned in the years following Sarawak’s independence through the formation of Malaysia in 1963. In recent years, the construction, shipbuilding, retail, financial services, tourism, education and manufacturing sectors have also contributed greatly to the city’s rapid economic growth. Today, Miri boasts a splendid waterfront, marina, shopping malls, luxury condominiums, two 18-hole golf courses, international class hotels and a modern airport.
