Entry Requirements
A Levels
- Grades A*AA-AAA
- Subjects History, Ancient History or Classical Civilisation required.
- AS Levels A pass in a further subject at AS level or equivalent is required.
- GCSEs English Language and Mathematics at grade C; Ancient European Language at grade B also welcomed. For UK-based students a Foreign Language at grade B is required.
IB Diploma
- Points 38-39
- Subjects A score of 18-19 points in three higher level subjects including grade 6 in History, with no score lower than 5. A minimum of 5 is required at standard level in a modern or ancient European language.
English Requirement
- Completed a minimum of twelve months education in a country that UCL considers to be ‘majority English speaking’, no more than the summer two years prior to the proposed date of enrollment
- Completed a minimum of eighteen months of work experience in a country that UCL considers to be ‘majority English speaking’, no more than two years prior to the proposed date of enrollment
- Completed a school leaving qualification containing English, which UCL considers to meet the CEFR B2 level in all four skills, no more than the summer two years prior to the proposed date of enrollment
- Obtained one of the English language tests accepted by UCL, no more than two years prior to the proposed date of enrollment. A number of qualifications and tests are recognized, UCL's preferred English language qualification being the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The qualification or test result must have been awarded at the appropriate level (standard, good or advanced).

- Concepts, Categories and the Practice of History
Optional courses
You will select 2.0 credits of optional courses, including at least 1.0 credit of Ancient History options. Options may include:
- The Greek World c.800-366 BC
- The History of Political Thought
- The Near East to 1200 BC: The Earliest States
- The Roman Republic.
Other options can be taken from within the History Department or from another approved interdepartmental programme (e.g. Archaeology, Classics).
Year Two
Compulsory courses

Optional courses
You will select 3.0 credits of optional courses, including at least 1.0 credit of Ancient History options. Options may include:
- Aristocracy in Ancient Greece
- Roman Democracy: Myth or Reality?
- The Roman Family
- Slavery in the Classical World
- The Hellenistic World from Alexander to the End of the Attalid Kingdom
- The Near East 1200-336 BC: Empire and Pastroralists
- The Roman Empire from Augustus to Theodosius I
- The Seleukid Empire, c.312-145 BC
Remaining credits can be selected from a wide range of options in Ancient Languages, History or from another approved interdepartmental or intercollegiate course.
Final Year

- Ancient Near Eastern Religion
- Citizens and Power in the Ancient City States
- Mechanisms of Power: Running the Roman Empire (c.70 BC - AD 275)
- The Assyrian Empire
- The Fall of the Roman Republic
- The Persian Empire in the 6th-4th Centuries BC
- War and Society in Ancient Greece, 750-350 BC.
Remaining credits can be selected from a wide range of options in History, Ancient Languages, or from another approved interdepartmental or intercollegiate course.
